Let's know about the Different boiler water test and Its procedure
1. Phenopthelin Test (P Alkalinity Test):
- Take 100 ml of boiler water sample.
- Add 10 drops of phenopthelin.
- Color will turns to pink.
- Now add N/50 sulfuric acid, till color will varnish.
- The quantity of sulfuric acid will indicate the phenopthelin alkalinity of boiler water.
Result : Drops of sulfuric acid *10 = P alkalinity in PPM.
2. Total Alkalinity Test :
- With the above sample add 10 drops of methyl orange.
- Color will turns to orange.
- Now add sulphuric acid, till color change to pink.
Result : No. of drops of sulphuric acid X 10 = Total alkalinity in PPM.
Note : This test is use to test hydroxide plus carbonate and bicarbonate in boiler water.
3 . Chloride Test :
- Sample after P-alkalinity test to be used.
- Add 10 drops of potassium chromate.
- Color changes to yellow.
- Add N/35 silver nitrate(Agno3), till color changes to brick red.
Result : Quantity of silver nitrate *10 = Chloride present in water in PPM.
4 . Phosphate Test :
- Take 25 ml of filtered boiler water sample.
- Add 25 ml of reagent molybdate.
- Then add one small spoon of stannous chloride color will change to blue.
Result - Use comparator to check the phosphate.
5 . P-H Test :
- It is check by using P-H paper
- Dip the PH paper.
- Use the color comparator to check the P-H.
6 . Hardness Test :
- Can be carried out by means of conductivity meter or we can use standard soap solution.
- Take boiler water in a beaker.
- Add soap solution and stir it for some time.
Result : More the foam formed less is the hardness in boiler water.
7 . Conductivity Test :
- Higher the conductivity, higher the hardness.
- So with the harness test you have the general idea about the conductivity.
The correct value we have to maintain In boiler water are:
- P alkalinity = 150 PPM.
- T alkalinity = 300 PPM.
- Chloride = Should not be more than 300 PPM.
- Phosphate = 40 -60 PPM.
- Conductivity = 3000 us/cm for High pressure boiler 400 us/cm.
- PH = 10-11.
